Testing

Testing

Earthing testing is a process that ensures the safety and reliability of electrical systems by measuring the resistance of the earth system. It’s important to test earthing systems regularly to ensure they’re working properly.

Why is earthing testing important?

  • Earthing systems protect people from electric shock and death
  • They protect buildings, machinery, and appliances from damage
  • They ensure that exposed conductive parts don’t reach dangerous potentials
  • They provide a safe path for lightning and short circuit currents

How is earthing testing done?

  • A certified electrician performs the test
  • The electrician measures the resistance of the earth electrode system
  • The electrician checks for damaged wires, cuts, or water ingress

What types of earthing tests are there?

  • Integrity testing: Measures the electrical resistance of the earthing system
  • Soil resistivity testing: Measures the resistivity of the soil where the earth grid is buried
  • Fall-of-potential method: Uses a current electrode and a potential electrode to measure the earth resistance
  • Earth injection testing: A method used for large-scale or complex earthing systems
